Autism Evaluations: Practical Tools

Project PEAK-Interdisciplinary Team

A Team Approach to Evaluating Asperger's Syndrome

Autism Evaluations: Practical Tools for School Based Teams

School psychologists are increasingly expected to be proficient in diagnosing children with suspected forms of autism at the preschool, elementary, and middle school levels. Standardized assessments alone limit their ability to effectively describe individual children and leads to a risk of misdiagnosis. Workshop participants learn to integrate the use of qualitative information to enhance their diagnostic skills. Best practices evaluation tools will be reviewed. Participants will be introduced to the MIGDAS, a qualitative evaluation tool developed by the presenter and used increasingly by school teams nationally. Through lecture and case presentations participants gain the following practical tools: use a visual framework to organize behavioral information for each of the three main forms of autism; develop a vocabulary of descriptive language linking the diagnosis to individual children; conduct a student interview using a “neuro-atypical” conversation to gather a qualitative behavior sample; and link the child’s behavioral profile to individualized and practical educational recommendations.

A Team Approach to Evaluating Aspergers Syndrome

This session will discuss a team approach for the identification of children with AS in the school setting. Recommendations about formal and informal tools that are consistent with the components of a comprehensive evaluation, outlined in the Policies and Procedures for Special Education in Oklahoma, will be provided. The complexities of distinguishing AS from other childhood disorders will also be explored. In addition, participants will gain strategies for effectively communicating evaluation results and recommendations in order to facilitate IEP development. The session will conclude with a parent of a child with AS joining the team for a panel discussion, which will address questions from the audience.
